This aphorism can replace many guides (e.g. what your momma taught you, the 10 commandments, golden rule, etc.) It is universal wisdom and the best religion. My physics professor said all the rules of mechanics can be derived from the formula F = MA (force equals mass times acceleration). It is much the same with "Be kind."
